GREENSBORO, N.C. – Delaware fell to Sacred Heart before edging Saint Peter's in a pair of identical 4-3 decisions Saturday at the UNCG Spartan Classic.
In the Blue Hens' first game of the day, Sacred Heart (6-7) took a 3-0 lead by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings. However Delaware (7-9) answered in the top of the fourth, as Brooke Glanden led off with a homer to rightfield before Anna Steinmetz followed with a solo shot to center.
Brittney Mendoza then opened the top of the sixth by blasting a home run to leftfield, making it a 3-3 game. Delaware had a shot to the lead in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded, before an RBI single by Alyssa Gonza in the bottom half gave the Pioneers the walkoff victory.
Delaware then took an early lead over Saint Peter's (2-8) by scoring three times in the bottom of the second. Sarah Bessel singled with one out and eventually scored on a fielder's choice, and after Hanna Garber singled home Ali Davis, Garber crossed the plate when Halle Kisamore reached on an error.
The Peacocks answered with two runs in the top of the third and another in the fourth to pull even, but the Blue Hens scored the winning run in the bottom half when pinch runner Julia Solderitch crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Meanwhile UD relief pitcher Sarah Piening worked out of a second and third, no-out jam in the fourth, before adding three more hitless innings to pick up her fifth win of the season. Piening retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced, including four strikeouts.
Garber paced the Blue Hen attack by going 4 for 6 with five steals on the day, while Steinmetz added a hit in each game.
