Blue Hens Drop 56-51 Heartbreaker at James Madison
3/9/2019 5:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Delaware held its own throughout the game, but in the end, rebounding hindered the Hens in Saturday's 56-51 loss to James Madison in the regular season finale at the JMU Convocation Center.
With the loss, the Blue Hens (16-14, 11-6 CAA) lock up the fifth seed in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Towson Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware led by as much as seven in the third quarter, but the top-seeded Dukes (25-4, 17-1 CAA) took advantage of rebounding and free throw opportunities to claim victory.
Bailey Kargo and Lizzie Oleary led the Hens with 12 points apiece while Oleary finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Samone DeFreese added seven points and six rebounds while Jasmine Dickey contributed six points and six rebounds.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Natasha Adair
"This is obviously not the way we want to finish the regular season, but I will say that I thought we competed. Anytime you go up against James Madison, you know you're going to have a battle on the boards. I felt we were locked in pretty much the whole game, but you have to come up with certain stops and possessions. There were key offensive rebounds that propelled JMU and you can't give a team on their home floor that momentum. This team has been fighting all year and to be in a one-possession game with the top team in the league speaks volumes for how much we've grown and how we're still hungry to play. This is good momentum going into the conference tournament and we're excited to host the Colonial Athletic Association in Newark next week."
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware held James Madison to just three points in the second quarter, a mark good to tie for first in Blue Hens history since the introduction of quarters during the 2015-16 season.
• The Dukes shot just 5 percent (1-for-20) from the field in the second quarter.
• Abby Gonzales dished out a game-best seven assists for UD.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
• Thursday, March 14 – Towson at Delaware – CAA Tournament Quarterfinals – 2:30 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.)
• With win: Friday, March 15 – CAA Tournament Semifinals – 1 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.)
