Bellinger is the offensive leader with 16 kills
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware volleyball team opened its CAA schedule Friday night, but will have to make up ground in the conference standings, falling to Towson in three sets (20-25, 19-25, 21-25) at the Bob Carpenter Center.Â
Â
The Blue Hens were paced by senior Maria Bellinger who led everyone with 16 kills to go along with five digs.
Â
After falling behind early, Delaware came charging back late in the first with senior Bailey Pearlman at the service line, firing an ace to cap-off a 4-0 run that forced a timeout to make it 21-19 Towson. The Tigers closed the set on a 4-1 run to claim the opener.
Â
After the slow start to the first, the Blue Hens came out charging in the second, opening the frame on a 3-0 run behind a pair of aces from freshman Lani Mason.
Â
Mason was in double-digits with 13 kills and a pair of service aces to go along with three blocks.
Â
Towson rattled off a 3-0 run of its own and controlled the majority of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
In the third and final set, Towson jumped out to a 19-12 lead before the Blue Hens were able to come back to make it 23-20 late in the frame, but the hole was just too deep to dig out of.
Â
Senior Andie Hanus was her usual self on the defensive side with 16 kills and freshman Ezgi Basaranlar had 32 assists.
Â
It will be a quick turnaround for Delaware as UNCW makes the trip north to the Bob Carpenter Center for a Saturday matchup at 5 p.m.
