Nieves Wins Individual Title, Sets 54-Hole Program Record at Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Blue Hen sophomore Roberto Nieves captured the individual title and set a 54-hole program record while Delaware also set a single round team mark as the Loyola Intercollegiate concluded on Monday.
Nieves fired his second five under par 67 of the tournament on Monday on the par 72, 7,015-yard course at Palm Valley Golf Club, finishing with an 11 under par 67-71-67-205. He sat in a three-way tie at 10 under par with two holes remaining before making a birdie on 11 and shooting par on 12 to claim medalist honors.
Nieves, who recorded five birdies without a bogey on Monday, established a new three-round program record. The previous record was held by Joe McLister who carded a 206 at the James Madison Invitational on Oct. 10-11, 2005. Nieves is the Blue Hens' first medalist since Marc Oliveri captured the individual title at the Colgate Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational on Sept. 3-4, 2016.
Delaware also set a team single round record by carding a 21 under par 267 on Monday, easily surpassing the previous mark of 274 set at the Navy Fall Classic on Sept. 11, 2010 and the Villanova Invitational on Apr. 9, 2019. The Blue Hens shot up seven spots to finish in fifth place out of 19 teams with an 855 total.
Drake won the team crown with an 849 score, while Eastern Michigan finished one shot back.
UD freshman Hugo Kedzlie carded the lowest round of the day by a Blue Hen with a sizzling seven under par 65, tied for the third lowest individual single round score in program history. Kedzlie fired seven birdies and 11 pars to finish in a tie for 20th place with an even par 78-73-65-216.
Matt Pulgini also had a fantastic day for Delaware with a five under par 67 that featured eight birdies and seven pars. Pulgini tied for 13th place at the tournament with a three under par score of 70-76-67-213.
Jack Melville was the fourth Blue Hen to shoot under par on Monday, as he fired a four under par 68 which included five birdies against just one bogey. Melville finished with a five over par 80-73-68-221 to tie for 62nd place at the invitational.
RJ Wren, playing as an individual, tied for 90th place with an 11 over par 77-73-77-227, while Michal Bargenda finished in 109th place with an 18 over par 82-76-76-234.
