NEWARK, Del. – A near capacity crowd at the Bob Carpenter Center saw the University of Delaware men's basketball team pick up its fifth straight win as the Blue Hens defeated rival Towson, 84-78, on Thursday night.
Behind a 34-point performance from redshirt junior Nate Darling, the Blue Hens tied a season-high with 13 three-pointers en route to their ninth 80-plus point outing of the campaign. Classmate Ryan Allen had 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Kevin Anderson (11 points) and Dylan Painter (10 points) also reached double figures.
The crowd of 4,675 is third largest crowd for a CAA game at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The five-game CAA winning streak is the Blue Hens' longest since the 2013-14 squad won 11 in a row, and the 7-4 start in league play is tied for the second-best start since the Blue Hens joined the league in 2001-02. While improving to 17-7 on the year, Delaware equaled its win total from a year ago.
Feeding off the energy of the crowd, Delaware jumped all over the Tigers early, knocking down five three-pointers in the first seven minutes to grab an early 21-9 lead.
Five points from Painter helped push the Blue Hens lead to 16 late in the first half before a late run by the Tigers sent Delaware into the break with a 42-32 advantage.
Towson would cut the lead to six early in the second half, but a huge three-pointer from Jacob Cushing increased the lead back to 13 with under 10 minutes remaining.
Once again the Tigers wouldn't go away, getting the lead down to three on several occasions, but Delaware went 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the home victory.
Delaware finished 27 of 32 from the charity stripe, the Blue Hens' most made free throws since the 2015-16 season.
