RICHMOND, Va. – On the court and field, they were defensive standouts. In the classroom, that same excellence was also on display.Â
Â
For those reasons and many more, Andie Hanus (volleyball) and Thomas Aloe (men's lacrosse) were named the University of Delaware's Scholar-Athlete of the Year representatives by the Colonial Athletic Association.Â
Â
"We are really proud of Andie. She is the epitome of what a premier student-athlete should embody," head coach Sara Matthews said. "She is an extremely hard worker and puts her all into everything she does. It has certainly paid off for her on the court as well as in the classroom and prepared her well for this next phase in her life."
Â
Hanus was the 2019 CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year for the Blue Hens, who earned a trip back to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 this past fall. She earned All-CAA Second Team accolades and ranked first in the CAA in total digs (495) and second in digs per set (4.76).Â
Â
Off the court, she was a three-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll honoree, seven-time member of the Dean's List and held a 3.92 cumulative grade point average while double majoring in International Relations and Public Policy. She is a three-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), completed a three-week study abroad program in Hungary and did a month-long internship in the Nebraska District II Congressional Office.Â
Â
The Omaha, Nebraska native plans on seeking her Master of Science in International Business at Delaware, while serving as a graduate assistant for the Blue Hens.Â
"Tom is a phenomenal ambassador for the University of Delaware, Blue Hen Athletics and our men's lacrosse program. He embodies our motto of 'Well done is better than well said.'," said head coach Ben DeLuca.  "Tom has demonstrated great character, discipline and leadership through his actions, and is driven by an uncompromising work ethic to be the very best.  His success and positive influence on the field, in the classroom and in the community set the standard for everyone in our program."
Â
Aloe, who served as a team captain this past year, has been a critical part of Delaware's defensive midfield for the past four seasons. He helped the Blue Hens earn a national-ranking for the second consecutive season and earned Second Team All-CAA honors at the long stick midfielder position in 2019. He was a member of a defense that ranked in the top-10 in the country in scoring defense over the past two seasons.Â
Â
Off the field, the Camden-Wyoming, Delaware native earned a 3.437 cumulative GPA in Biological Science en route to a career in the dental field. He is a five-time member of the Dean's List, while compiling nearly 300 hours of shadowing time with dentists throughout the First State. He is also a regular member of the program's mentorship program at Joseph McVey Elementary School, in addition to being a member of the Pre-Dental Society at UD.Â
Â
He has been accepted and will be attending Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in the future.Â
