The 1980-81 University of Delaware women's swimming & diving team went undefeated in 13 dual meets, won the program's first ever EAIAW team regional title and placed ninth at the AIAW nationals during a record-setting season.
Led by second-year head coach Edgar Johnson, the Blue Hens posted a 13-0 mark in dual meets, the team's first undefeated season and tying the dual meet win record of 13-1 set the previous year. In the process, the squad extended its dual meet win streak to 23, a mark that would eventually total the most by any team sport in UD history.
The Blue Hens captured their first ever Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) team regional title, improving from a 14th place finish in 1980.
Delaware moved on to the AIAW nationals at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. and placed ninth nationally, the best national finish in program history. Six women represented UD at the meet - Bev Angulo, Mary Carr, Linda Hiltabiddle, Karen Jaeger, Dawn Mayers, and Mary Pat Johnson - and all received All-American honors.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Mayers, Angulo, Carr and Johnson won the national championship with a time of 1:39.41. That clocking was one of 46 new Delaware records established that season and was just .8 off the national record in the event.
The four members of the 200 freestyle relay team have all been inducted into the UD Athletics Hall of Fame, as well as Edgar Johnson who later served as the Blue Hens' long-time athletic director.
