Baker, Ludman and Wakeley Named Baseball Captains

NEWARK, Del. – Ahead of the 2021 season, the University of Delaware baseball program has named graduate students Kyle Baker and Derek Wakelely along with junior Chris Ludman team captains.

"We feel like it's more important than ever to have the right guys holding this responsibility and I couldn't be prouder to have these three individuals helping to lead our program," said 21st-year head coach Jim Sherman. "We have a wealth of leadership and experience on our roster and know it's going to take everyone to reach our goals this season."

Baker becomes a three-year captain, now in his sixth season with the Blue and Gold due to redshirts and NCAA eligibility waivers. He has a career batting average of .326 with 170 hits, 86 runs and 72 RBIs. In 2018, he was the CAA's batting champion when he compiled a .345 average and led the Blue Hens in hits, triples, RBIs and slugging.

Wakeley has been a staple out of the Delaware bullpen ever since arriving in Newark and is now a two-time team captain. The junior college transfer has served as the Blue Hens' closer compiling 57 strikeouts in just 30 appearances. He has seven career saves and was listed on the 2020 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.

Ludman enters his fourth year with the Blue Hens as a junior and was the team's leader in strikeouts in the shortened 2020 season. He has started 20 of his 36 appearances on the bump, compiling 110 strikeouts in his two full seasons and one shortened year. Â
