NEWARK, Del. –University of Delaware Baseball Head Coach Greg Mamula has announced the hiring of former Fightin' Blue Hen catcher Tyler Leach as an assistant coach on Monday. Leach, who will work primarily with Delaware's catchers while also assisting with recruiting, assumes the role on August 24.
"It is great to have Tyler back in a Delaware uniform," said Mamula. "He had a tremendous career here as a player and understands what it means to be a Blue Hen. Tyler brings a wealth of experience behind the plate, and I'm excited about the impact he will have developing our catchers."
Leach returns to Delaware after spending the 2023 and 2024 seasons behind the plate for the Blue Hens. After beginning his collegiate career at High Point, Leach became Delaware's starting catcher during both of his seasons in Newark.
In two seasons UD, Leach played in 88 games and hit .265 with 18 home runs, 67 RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. He posted an .873 OPS and threw out 24 opposing base stealers. Leach was named a CAA Honorable Mention catcher following the 2024 season.
A native of Bel Air, Maryland, Leach began his coaching career at his alma mater, the John Carroll School, where he has served as an assistant coach. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the Olney Cropdusters during the summer of 2026. Olney went on to win the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League championship.
Leach earned his degree in Exercise Science from Delaware in 2024 and completed his MBA at Southern New Hampshire in 2026.
"I'm extremely excited to return to Delaware and be part of this program again," said Leach. "Delaware had a tremendous impact on me as a player, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to come back and help our players develop both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to working with our catchers and helping Coach Mamula and our staff continue to build Delaware baseball."
