BOSTON – Delaware completed the sweep of Northeastern, notching a scrappy 68-61 win in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Tuesday afternoon inside the Cabot Center.
The Blue Hens (5-1, 2-0 CAA) were led by junior guard Jasmine Dickey, who poured in 19 points, including 12 in the second half. The Baltimore native went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds.
Junior point guard Paris McBride was critical for the Delaware offense, knocking down 4-of-6 from three-point range on her way to 16 points, and dishing a game-high seven assists. Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle notched her CAA-leading fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Battle was huge on the defensive end, adding three blocks and two steals.
Mide Oriyomi led the Huskies (0-4, 0-2 CAA) for the second night in a row with 22 points.
While the Blue Hens did not have the hot shooting they experienced the previous night, they hit big shots at the right times, going 14-of-17 (82.4%) from the free throw line and 6-of-16 (37.5%) from deep. Delaware did keep up its defensive intensity from the first game of the series, limiting Northeastern to a 42.9% clip from the floor and 25% from beyond the arc.
Delaware once again found success in transition, outscoring Northeastern in both points off turnovers (20-13) and fast break points (15-6). Delaware also outrebounded the Huskies by a 38-30 margin.
The Blue Hens held a 28-23 lead after a back-and-forth first half, holding the Huskies scoreless for the final 2:23 of the second quarter.
Delaware led by as many as 15 in the third quarter, highlighted by a 12-3 run midway through the frame. McBride went on a mini 5-0 run of her own, draining a floater off the glass and a three-pointer.
After Northeastern's Kendall Currence answered with a three, the Blue Hens put together a 7-0 stretch in 42 seconds. Dickey made a lay-up, which was immediately followed by a Jewel Smalls steal that sprung a Tee Johnson lay-up on the fast break. Smalls drained a three on the next possession to push the lead to 48-33 and force the Huskies into a timeout.
Northeastern fought back to cut the lead to just four in the final quarter, but a 6-0 Blue Hens run punctuated by an acrobatic finish by Battle on the fast break put Delaware ahead 65-55 with 45 seconds remaining, and the game out of reach.
Delaware and Northeastern were originally scheduled to play Charleston and Elon, respectively, this weekend, but positive cases within those programs caused the CAA to shift the new series to Boston.
The Blue Hens return to the Bob Carpenter Center for their next games, hosting William & Mary on Jan. 9 and 10. Both games will tip off at 1 p.m.
