PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In a game that had Blue Hen fans on the edge of their seats in double overtime, it was the No. 23 Delaware field hockey team that upset No. 9 Saint Joseph's University Friday afternoon, 4-3. Julia Duffhuis and Kiki Oudshoorn rose to the occasion, as they both netted two goals apiece in the win.Â
"A great win for our program over a true Top-10 opponent. Our team continues to grow from watching film, competing with each other in practice, and today, for three quarters at least, we saw the fruits of that labor! Now we look to start a 'fresh season' as we open our CAA conference schedule," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof.
Saint Joseph's got on the board early in the sixth minute of the game with a feed from 30 yards outside the circle, tipping the ball into the back of the net.
Delaware answered back on a corner with no time left on the clock in the first period. Julia Duffhuis scored on the fourth penalty corner of the period with assists from Ashlyn Carr and Grace Miller.Â
Kiki Oudshoorn gave the Blue Hens a 2-1 lead in the third minute of the second period. She had a long run on the left side and was able to score low on Robin Bleekemolen, hitting the backboard.
Duffhuis scored her second goal of the afternoon on a penalty stroke in the third quarter, notching her seventh goal of the season to give Delaware a 3-1 lead.Â
The Hawks scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a corner to make it a 3-2 game. Lizzie Gaebel had key saves on another corner with under six minutes left on the clock. Saint Joseph's put in an extra player with under four minutes remaining and tied the game 3-3.
The first overtime period went scoreless, with the Hawks edging the Blue Hens in shots 3-2. With three minutes left in the second period Oudshoorn chipped in a rebound for the game-winning goal.
Gaebel had seven saves on the day, three of which were in the first overtime period.Â
