Following a Tyler Pastula punt that pinned Stony Brook (2-5, 1-3 CAA) on its own 1-yard line, the Seawolves ran their first play from scrimmage that resulted in a 99-yard touchdown run to put the Blue Hens in an early 7-0 hole.
The score remained the same until early in the second quarter, when a one-yard plunge moved Stony Brook's lead to 13-0.
Dejoun Lee got the offense sparked on Delaware's next play from scrimmage, rushing for 28 yards to get the ball to midfield. Three plays later, Zach Gwynn found Pitts deep down the left sideline for a 33-yard touchdown pass to get the Blue Hens on the board.
Later in the second quarter, Lee against kickstarted a drive with a 43-yard rush deep into Stony Brook territory. Ryan Coe cut the deficit to 13-10 with a 33-yard field goal right before halftime.
Stony Brook connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter to go up 20-10, but the Blue Hens again had an answer. An 11-play drive resulted in another touchdown pass from Gwynn to Pitts, this time going to 28 yards to make it a 20-17 game with just 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The Blue Hens got possession back late in the fourth quarter, but a strip sack led to a short touchdown run. Later on a muffed punt was recovered in the end zone to provide the final score.
Gwynn finished 15-of-29 passing for 199 yards and the two touchdowns. Pitts recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season with 115 yards on seven catches. Lee led the rushing attack with 91 yards.
Colby Reeder led the Delaware defense with a career-high 12 tackles, including a sack and 1.5 TFL. Noah Plack finished with nine tackles, while Andrew Pawlowski and Johnny Buchanan each had nine. Chase McGowan added a pair of sacks.
Delaware will return home next Saturday, October 23 when the Blue Hens host James Madison for a Homecoming matchup. The contest is set to kick off at 3 p.m. and will open a three-game homestand for the Blue Hens. Fans can purchase tickets for that game and all remaining home games HERE.
