Volleyball Splits Weekend Series at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – The streak ends at four. The University of Delaware volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 23-25) CAA road decision to Northeastern (9-9, 5-3 CAA) snapping their four-match winning streak Sunday afternoon inside Cabot Center in Boston, Mass.
The Blue Hens (9-10, 4-6 CAA) put together their best hitting set in the third stanza to finish the match attacking at a rate of .167. Northeastern hit at .266 while holding the edge in points (57-50), kills (42-41), aces (4-3), blocks (11-6) and digs (47-42). Both teams drew even in assists with 38 apiece.
In another tightly contested match, Delaware held a two-point lead after Lani Mason nailed down Ezgi Basaranlar's feed, 11-9. Northeastern went on a 5-0 scoring spurt to regain the advantage, 14-11. With 19-14 showing on the scoreboard, the Blue Hens used a 6-2 run to pull within one point, 21-20. The Huskies closed out the opening set with a 4-1 run to capture the win, 25-21.
Down 1-0 to open the second set, Delaware scored three-straight points ignited by Mason's kill, 3-1. The back-and-forth battle continued as the game saw eight ties and seven lead changes before Northeastern scored five unanswered points, 18-13. The Blue Hens got in as close as two points after Seemans' kill, 20-18, before the Huskies claimed set two with a 5-2 run, 25-20.
Delaware kick started the final set with a 5-2 run. Northeastern closed the gap and regained the lead after scoring four straight, 11-9. Grace Underwood and Lauryn Richardson went up for a block to start a dominating 12-4 Blue Hen run to take its biggest lead of the afternoon, 21-15. The Huskies responded with a 10-2 run to settle the 25-23 set three final and complete the sweep.
Mason finished with a match-high 14 kills to go with five digs to pace Delaware. Seemans followed with 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces to register her fourth double-double of the season. Basaranlar dished out a match-best 36 assists to go along with nine digs. Kirah Johnson (seven kills), Underwood (five kills) and Richardson (four kills) each had two block assists.
Nailah Jenkins led Northeastern to victory with 10 kills, six block assists and four digs. Anya Korbut and Evelyn Gonzalez (eight digs) both chipped in eight kills and four block assists. Jessica Frannea directed the Huskies offense with 25 assists to go with six digs and five kills while Kayla Martin scooped up a match-high 12 digs.

The Blue Hens return to campus next Saturday, Oct. 23, to host the College of Charleston Cougars (13-8, 6-4 CAA) in a CAA Homecoming showdown starting at 11 a.m. inside Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del.
