Blue Hens Come Up Just Short at ITA Atlantic Regional

ANNAPOLIS, MD. – Delaware men's tennis had two individuals reach the Round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional over the weekend, coming up just one win short of advancing to the ITA Super Regional Championships. Overall, the four Blue Hen individuals and two doubles teams combined to win nine matches over the weekend. Play was held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Senior James Wilkinson and graduate student Guilherme Valdoleiros each advanced the Round of 16. Valdoleiros cruised to victories over opponents from Loyola Maryland (6-1, 6-2) and Navy (7-6(4), 3-1 ret.) before coming back for a hard-fought three-set victory over a foe from the University of Virginia (4-6, 7-5, 6-3). Just one win away, Valdoleiros dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to his Temple adversary.
Wilkinson enjoyed a first-round bye before taking down individuals from Villanova (6-2, 6-4) and Navy (7-6(3), 2-6, 6-1). In his Round of 16 matchup against a Penn State opponent, Wilkinson came up short 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Luis Molina also won a singles match, defeating his Georgetown adversary (6-2, 6-4) in the second round after having a first-round bye.
In doubles action, the team of Molina and Wilkinson had a bye into the second round where they easily beat a duo from Navy 8-2 before falling in the Round of 16. Valdoleiros and freshman Pascal Wagemaker came away with victories over teams from Loyola (8-2) and Villanova (8-3) before also coming short in the Round of 16.
The Blue Hens will be back in action the weekend of October 30-31 when the squad travels to Philadelphia for the Dragon Invite, hosted by Drexel University.
