Women’s Soccer Battles Elon to 1-1 Draw
10/3/2021 3:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ELON, N.C. – Ninety minutes was not enough to determine a winner today between Delaware (4-6-1, 1-0-1 CAA) and Elon (5-4-1, 0-1-1 CAA) women's soccer. Both the Blue Hens and the Phoenix went toe-to-toe through double overtime ending in a 1-1 draw for the two teams.
"I'm so proud of these kids. Being successful in any conference is a difficult thing to do and then to do it on the road, minus a handful of starters makes it even harder," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "Elon is an organized, well coached team. It was a battle and I'm proud of the kids for stepping up to the challenge."
In the first half, Elon held a 3-2 edge on shots at the break. Besides that, it was a back and forth game that left both goalkeepers with limited action in the first 45 minutes.
Katie Hackley scored the first goal of the match and her first of the season when she booted the ball off her right foot and into the left side of the net in the 64th minute.
Elon responded two minutes later when Carson Jones found the opening in the next after a free kick set up the timing and the positioning for Jones to tie the game up at 1-1.
Both overtime periods were full of energy and determination with neither team wanting to walk away with the loss.
Mia Reed made her first collegiate start in the goal this afternoon. She finished with six saves, including some game-saving ones at the end of the second half and in overtime. The Blue Hens tallied 12 shots with seven on goal. Delaware had a trio of corner kicks in the match.
McKenna Dalfonso had six saves for Elon in the net. The Phoenix finished with 15 shots with seven on goal and seven corner kicks.
Today was the second overtime match for the Blue Hens this season and the first in league play.
The Blue Hens return to the pitch on Thursday with a 7 p.m. match at Hofstra. Delaware will then return to Newark to host the College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 10 at1 p.m.
