STORRS, Conn. - The No. 21 Delaware field hockey team (10-8) was edged, 2-1, by No. 20 UConn (10-10) Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale.Â
"A game with two different Delaware teams today," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We can compete and put together a good performance versus any team, it just requires executing the game-plan and working with and for each other. Our players group knows today's showing was below par. They also fully understand that in order to advance in the post season our team work, effort and discipline will be the difference makers."
In the sixth minute of the game, the Blue Hens had an opportunity to score on a penalty corner. Julia Duffhuis took the shot at the top of the circle, but it was Ashlyn Carr on the rebound to get Delaware on the board with an early 1-0 lead.Â
After a review of a foul just two minutes into the second period, UConn was awarded a penalty corner. The Huskies were able to answer back and tie the game, 1-1, with a goal from Claire Jandewerth.
At the end of the first half, the teams were tied in shots (6), shots on goal (4) and saves (3), with Delaware having a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.
With about five minutes left in the third period, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead on a penalty corner by Erica Solomen. This secured the win for UConn, as the fourth period remained scoreless.Â
Delaware had an advantage in shots (12-8), shots on goal (8-5) and penalty corners (7-4). The Huskies' goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher had six saves in the game along with a team defensive save by UConn to shut down the Blue Hen's offense.Â
The Blue and Gold looks ahead to the CAA Field Hockey Championship where they will take on No. 3 William & Mary as the No. 2 seed at 4 p.m., Nov. 5.
