Volleyball Concludes Season In CAA Semifinals

TOWSON, Md. – The fourth-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team saw its season come to an end Friday afternoon after falling in straight sets (18-15, 19-25, 15-25) to top-seeded Towson (25-4) in the semifinal round of the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, presented by Primis, inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. The Blue Hens conclude the campaign with a 15-12 record while the Tigers advance to tomorrow's title game.
Delaware fought for the advantage throughout the opening set, including Grace Underwood and Lani Mason being responsible for scoring the Blue Hens' three-straight points to knot the game up at 16. Towson remained composed and put together a 9-2 run to close out the set and walk away with the 25-18 set one win.
The Tigers opened the second set with a 10-2 scoring spurt capped by Rachel Hess' ace. The Blue Hens trimmed the deficit to six, 13-7, after Lily Rogers and Grace Underwood sent away Fay Bakodimou's attempt. Seeing the scoreboard read 18-10 in favor of Towson, Delaware battled to make it a 23-18 game highlighted by Ezgi Basaranlar and Rogers connecting for back-to-back points. The Tigers then took the set two win with an Irbe Lazda kill, 25-19.
Facing elimination sparked a sense of urgency in the Blue Hens to open the final set by being on the right side of back-to-back errors by the Tigers, 4-2. Delaware refused to be intimidated by Towson's runs and scored three-straight to pull within two, 12-10, thanks to a pair of kills by Savannah Seemans. The Tigers remained in control using a 12-4 run to complete the sweep and secure a spot in Friday's title game.
Mason paced Delaware with nine kills and three digs. Seemans followed with nine digs and eight kills. Underwood had six kills, five blocks to close out her career in a Blue Hen uniform. Rogers (seven digs, five blocks) and Basaranlar directed Delaware's offense with 12 and 10 assists respectively. Anchoring the Blue Hens defense was Katie Turner with 12 digs.
Nina Caji finished with seven kills and two block assists to lead Towson. Bakodimou scooped up 10 digs while Lydia Wiers added nine block assists. Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson dished out 15 and 13 assists respectively. Towson finished the match hitting .224
Delaware graduates a three-member senior class consisting of Adelina Rivera, Turner and Underwood.
