NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball returned home Sunday afternoon and captured a dominating 73-57 win over Charlotte (1-4) inside the Bob Carpenter Center. The win moves the Blue Hens to 4-1 on the young season.
"We are always talking about defense, that is our identity, we want to defend and we want to rebound," said head coach Natasha Adair. "We didn't know how much we were going to run today because we were shorthanded. We wanted those two things – defend and rebound, and that was going to dictate the tempo. On the boards, you have to fly around and we have to send a message on how hard we have to play today. We wanted to also show our fans what Delaware basketball is about and how hard we want to compete. I am so proud of them because they just respond night in and night out."
Charlotte took a five-point lead at 11-6 with 5:01 remaining in the opening quarter, before Tyi Skinner knocked down a jumper as Delaware responded with a 10-3 run to take a 16-14 lead into the second quarter.
The 49ers tied the game at 16-16 early in the second quarter before Tara Cousins drilled one from deep to kick start an 8-0 Blue Hen run. Delaware then took a double figure lead at 28-18 at the 2:39 mark thanks to a Ty Battle layup. Charlotte poured in a quartet of freebies to trim the deficit to six points, 28-22, with 1:03 left. Jasmine Dickey finished Skinner's feed to push the Blue Hens' lead back up to eight before Octavia Jett-Wilson's layup sent the 49ers into the break trailing by six, 30-24.
Charlotte got in as close as three points, 38-35, with 5:04 showing on the third-quarter clock. The Blue Hens then erupted with a 14-0 spurt, capped by Skinner's three-point play, to extend the lead to 52-35.
Delaware maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the final quarter, including seeing Dickey drain a jumper to balloon the lead to a game-high 20 points at 67-47. With 1:10 remaining, Charlotte trailed by 14 points before Tee Johnson called backboard when knocking down her jumper to push the Blue Hens lead back up to 73-55. The 49ers used Mya Mcgraw's layup to settle the 73-57 final.
Dickey put together her third consecutive 30-plus point performance by netting 31 points and added six rebounds to her stat line to lead Delaware to its third straight victory. Skinner followed with 16 points, five assists and five rebounds. Battle, the double-double machine, posted her fourth consecutive with 15 points and 13 rebounds along with two steals. Makayla Pippin pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds in her first-career start in the Blue Hen uniform.
Jett-Wilson paced Charlotte with 22 points and eight rebounds while Boykin chipped in 14 points and five rebounds.
Delaware shot 36.6 percent (26-of-71) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line. Charlotte connected on 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three-point territory and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens held a plus-14 rebound margin (54-40) while scoring 10 second-chance points off of 19 offensive rebounds.
