MIAMI – The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the FIU Thanksgiving Classic Friday afternoon by capturing an 87-72 victory over Eastern Michigan (2-2) inside Ocean Bank Convocation Center. With the win, the Blue Hens (5-1) extend their winning streak to four games.
"Gritty, gritty, gritty win on the road against a very tough Eastern Michigan team," said head coach Natasha Adair. "It was 0-0 basically going into the fourth and we talked to the team about responding - its winning time - and we were going to have to do it on the defensive end. It wasn't a trade basket deal - it was dig deep, be disciplined, and be focused. They responded in such a big way. I am just proud of how they grow and how they mature from game to game to game."
Eastern Michigan opened the game with a 6-1 run forcing Delaware to call timeout at 6:10. The Blue Hens came out of the timeout and erupted with a 16-7 run, thanks to Jasmine Dickey scoring 14-straight points, to take the 17-13 lead with 1:41 remaining. The Eagles closed out the first quarter by scoring four unanswered points to make it a 17-all game.
Dickey continued to be a walking bucket in the second quarter, pouring in seven-straight points as part of Delaware's 7-2 run to build a five-point cushion, 24-19. With 7:12 left, Kyndal Lewis laid in two for Eastern Michigan to pull within three, 24-21, before the Blue Hens put together another 9-2 run over the next 2:07 to extend its lead to double-digits, 33-23. Working to get within single digits, the Eagles outscored the Blue Hens 9-7 over the remaining 5:01 to take the eight-point deficit, 40-32, into the break.
Back-to-back layups by Maddie Sims and Dickey to open the third quarter scoring pushed Delaware's lead to 12 points, 44-32. Eastern Michigan worked diligently to outscore Delaware 19-10 over the span of 6:15, headlined by Areanna Combs 11 points, to knot the game at 54. Ce'Nara Skanes sank a pair of free throws to regain the brief two-point lead, 56-54. In the final 1:10, the Blue Hens wouldn't allow the Eagles lead to grow by more than two points as Tyi Skinner took care of business at the free-throw line sending the 60-all game into the fourth quarter.
Eastern Michigan took its last lead of the afternoon after Combs' layup at the 9:10 mark, 62-60. Then it was all Delaware basketball coach Adair talks about. Ty Battle finished off Dickey's feed to ignite a dominating 22-0 run for the Blue Hens, allowing the lead to balloon to a game-high 20 points, 82-62. Dickey was fouled with 2:04 remaining and she put away her 48th point to sit second in program history in points scored in a single game, eclipsing Elena Delle Donne's 42 points scored at Hofstra back on Feb. 16, 2012. Eastern Michigan closed out the game on a 7-4 scoring spurt to settle the 87-72 final. Adding to her career-high performance of 48 points (19-36 FG, 9-12 FT), Dickey finished with eight rebounds to lead Delaware to victory. Skinner followed with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Tee Johnson poured in nine points and pulled down six boards (four offensive) while Battle chipped in seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Combs paced Eastern Michigan with 26 points (10-of-20 FG, 6-of-7 FT) and 11 rebounds. Danielle Rainey added 15 points (4-9 FG, 3-4 3FG, 4-4 FT) as Skanes finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware shot 45.3 percent (34-75) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-9) from beyond the arc and 70.8 percent (17-24) from the free throw line. Eastern Michigan connected on 43.5 percent (27-62) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-13) from three-point territory and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens held a plus-7 rebound margin (36-29) while scoring 16 second-chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Eastern Michigan in steals (8-2), points in the paint (50-40) and fast-break points (9-2) while scoring 31 points off of 19 Eagle miscues. Eastern Michigan held the edge in assists (9-2), blocks (3-2) and bench points (11-9).
