NEWARK, Del. – 2,000 career assists and counting!! The University of Delaware volleyball team closed out its non-conference slate Thursday evening with a straight-set (25-19, 27-25, 25-20) home victory over UMBC (15-11) inside Bob Carpenter Center in Newark on Most Valuable Professors (MVP) Night. Behind Ezgi Basaranlar notching her 2,000th career assists and becoming the ninth player in program history to make the elusive list, the Blue Hens snapped the Retrievers' 10-match winning streak and moves to a 12-12 mark on the season.
Prior to opening serve, the Blue Hens celebrated their Most Valuable Professors (MVP).

With the opening set being their finest attacking percentage (.297), Delaware finished the match outhitting the visitors .270 to .160. The Blue Hens also led the charge in points (58-40), kills (43-35), aces (9-2), blocks (6-3) and assists (39-34) while the Retrievers held the edge in digs (51-41).
"There are some things that I am really proud of the team tonight," said Head Coach Sara Matthews. "I thought our serving was really good for the most part. We got after it, we were aggressive, we had some good runs of aces. We need to take care of some misses in opportune times but for the most part we did a really good job taking them out of system. They're a good team, they're 10-0 right now in their conference so for us going into next weekend, with our last weekend of conference play, it's a really good win."
The opening set was tied at 11-all when Lauryn Richardson put away Lily Rogers' feed to ignite a 6-0 Blue Hens' run, with Lani Mason serving five-straight. UMBC trailed by two after Mia Bilusic's kill (21-19) before Delaware capitalized on four-straight Retriever errors to earn the 25-19 set one victory.
UMBC took a six-point lead, 17-11, in the second stanza, thanks to a Grace Rigsbee's kill. The Blue Hens responded quickly with a 9-2 scoring spurt to regain the lead, 20-19. The Retrievers was able to knot the game up three times (23-23) before Basaranlar set Rogers up beautifully with her 2,000th career assist to give Delaware set point, 24-23. UMBC wouldn't go away quietly as the team tied the set twice more (25-25). The Blue Hens remained composed as Kirah Johnson and Richardson both put away Rogers' assists to claim the set two win, 27-25.
"Wow, this is amazing," Basaranlar exclaimed. "I couldn't have done this without my teammates. It was a great win today for us and I am so happy that I got 2,000 assists, I had no idea!" Matthews commented, "I am super excited that Ezgi got her 2,000th assist today. She has been a huge part of our program and of our success over the last couple of years and we are just really fired up for her."
The Retrievers was able to tie the game at nine courtesy of Bilusic's kill in the third set. The Blue Hens never swayed as the team erupted with a 9-3 surge capped by Basaranlar's ace to go ahead 18-12. UMBC answered with a 5-1 run of itsown to pull within two, 19-17.
