The Gold squad defeated the Blue team, 4-1, Thursday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium in the first game of UD's Fall World Series.
Gold starter Carter Welch earned the win after scattering four hits and striking out four batters in four scoreless innings. Reliever Jose Ledesma made the defensive play of the game when he hopped off the mound to the third base side to make a sliding barehand grab and fire to first to take away a base hit bunt attempt. Mike Biasiello then pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh inning to earn the save.
Joey Loynd had a big day at the plate for the Gold, going 2 for 3 including a two-run homer and a double. Brett Lesher finished 1 for 3 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
Owen Petrich went 1 for 2 and had the only RBI for Blue team with a groundout in the bottom of the fifth.
Six Blue pitchers combined to strike out six while not walking a batter in seven frames, with Reece Bolton pitching a hitless inning of relief with a strikeout.
The second game of the series will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
