2021 Delaware Men’s Soccer Year In Review

The 2021 Delaware men's soccer season posted wins over UMBC and Old Dominion during its season this fall, finishing the year with a 2-12-1 record.
The Wins
Einar Hardarson, Carlos Fernandez and Zach Golden each scored goals as the Blue Hens posted a 3-1 road victory at UMBC on Sept. 28.
The Blue Hens struck first in the 24th minute when Tiago Santos played a corner kick to Hardarson, who fired a shot into the top right corner of the net.
In the 56th minute Pedro Barbolla dribbled to the left endline before feeding a pass to Fernandez who scored from close range to put the Blue Hens in front for good.
Delaware added an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Golden collected a pass from Justin Ruth and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the cage for his first career goal.
The UD defense would make the lead stand up, as goalkeeper Scott Sampson needed to make just two saves on the night.
Delaware scored three second half goals as the Blue Hens rallied to defeat Old Dominion, 3-1, in their home finale at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium on Oct. 27.
The Monarchs carried a 1-0 lead into the break, before Delaware erupted for three goals in the second half.
In the 61st minute Tiago Santos send a chip into the box, where Rex Twum collected the pass and slid home a shot from six yards out for the equalizer.
Josh Hesson took a pass from Ryan Mertz down the left side and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net in the 76th minute to put the Blue Hens in front for good. Justin Ruth added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when he collected a pass from Santos, dribbled to the top of the box and ripped a shot into the right side of the cage.
UD keeper Gonzalo Bartoli earned his first win as a Blue Hen by making four saves on the night.
Among National Leaders
Goalkeeper Scott Sampson ranked 28th in the nation by averaging 4.56 saves per game.
Team Leaders
Carlos Fernandez led the Blue Hens with 10 points on the season, tying for the team lead with both three goals and four assists. Fellow freshman Einar Hardarson finished second on the squad with eight points on three goals and two helpers. Josh Hesson also scored three goals during the fall, while Tiago Santos tied Fernandez with a team-high four assists.
Gonzalo Bartoli posted a 1.91 goals against average, while Scott Sampson made 41 saves in the Blue Hen net.
And the honor goes to…
Blue Hen junior defender Aron Adalsteinsson was named to the CAA Men's Soccer Third Team while freshman forward Carlos Fernandez was selected to the All-Rookie Team.
Adalsteinsson, who also earned third team all-league honors in the spring, appeared in 11 matches while making 10 starts this fall. He tallied one shot on the season against James Madison while anchoring the Blue Hen backfield.
Fernandez saw action in all 15 contests while making 12 starts, leading the Hens with 10 points while tying for the team lead with three goals and four assists. He scored UD's goal in the 1-1 draw at American, and added a goal and an assist at UNCW. Fernandez also scored during the 3-1 victory at UMBC, before adding one assist against Hofstra and two at Northeastern.
