Women's Lacrosse: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee
12/3/2021
The Delaware women's lacrosse team has developed five committees in support of five different organizations the team feels passionate about. They have incredible leaders in the senior class and wanted to create areas for them to utilize their leadership qualities. The women's lacrosse program is heavily involved in giving back and supporting a variety of organizations any way possible. The Blue Hens want to spread awareness and leave a lasting impact on the community.
The final committee that will be highlighted is the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and is run by seniors Meghan Johnson and Mercy McCarthy. We talked to Johnson and McCarthy to find out more about the committee and why it is important to them.
WHAT DOES THE DEI Committee DO?
EDUCATE, ENGAGE, EMBODY. These three words outline the goal of our team’s DEI Committee. The committee was created to educate, create discussion and embody an inclusive environment around the athletic department. We strive to educate ourselves by reading various books, listing to podcasts, watching documentaries and host guest speakers to talk to the team and discuss their diverse backgrounds, as well as discuss their personal struggles being a person of color.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO REPRESENT THE DEI Committee ?
DEI is so prominent within our society and as a team we always talk about how we are a part of “something that is bigger than ourselves.” We want this committee to continue even after we graduate so the program continues to become more educated, continues to engage and embody an inclusive environment.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE DEI Committee?
The goals for this committee is to promote an inclusive environment for all skin types, educate the team on topics of diversity, and create a sense of belonging to everyone who is on the team no matter their background. We aim to have open and honest conversations about diversity. Some of the events we will be doing throughout the year will include team movie nights in which we will screen informative documentaries. This will include post documentary reflection questions to continue the thought process and contemplation.
WHY IS THE DEI Committee IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Being a primarily white team we seek to understand the struggles of minority groups. We are very excited to start this committee and continue education on the topics of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
