Delaware secures its sixth sweep of a CAA series this season
PHILADELPHIA – Delaware women's basketball secured its sixth sweep of a Colonial Athletic Association series this season, beating Drexel 66-55 in a defensive battle Sunday afternoon inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Blue Hens improved to 16-2 on the year and 13-1 in CAA play, marking the most conference wins in a season since the 2012-13 team went 18-0 in the CAA on its way to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
Junior guard Jasmine Dickey led all scorers with 25 points, including a dominant 17 in the second half, while adding eight rebounds and three assists. This is the 13th 20-point game of the season for Dickey, and her 20th straight game in double figures, dating back to last season.
Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle picked up her CAA-leading 12th double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards, and was a constant presence on the defensive end with three steals and two blocks.
Keishana Washington led Drexel with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting.
The Blue Hens out-rebounded the Dragons 44-31, and grabbed 23 offensive boards compared to Drexel's 21 defensive rebounds, which they converted into 20 second-chance points. Delaware also forced Drexel into 19 turnovers, which turned into 19 Blue Hen points.
Drexel opened the second quarter with a 21-15 lead, but a 17-2 Delaware run that bridged the second and third quarters gave the Blue Hens a 37-25 advantage midway through the third period. The Dragons responded with a 10-0 run of their own, and remained within two possessions until late in the fourth quarter.
After a Hannah Nihill three cut the Delaware lead to 50-47 with 3:58 left, the Blue Hens broke off an 8-0 run to take control of the game. In a span of less than a minute, senior forward Lizzie Oleary finished a put-back lay-up through contact, Dickey drained a pull-up jumper, then deposited a fast-break lay-up after grabbing a defensive board.
Freshman guard Tyi Skinner scored an acrobatic lay-up to push the lead to 60-49 with just 1:14 remaining; Delaware knocked down six free throws to close out the win from there.
The Blue Hens have just two CAA series remaining on the schedule for the regular season, traveling to James Madison for a two-game set on Feb. 20 and 21 before hosting Towson for two games on Feb. 27 and 28. Both games in Harrisonburg will tip off at 6 p.m.
