Jewel Smalls sets program record for 3s in Blue Hens' first win over JMU since 2013
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Delaware women's basketball outlasted James Madison in an overtime thriller, 94-88, Saturday night inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The Blue Hens (17-2, 14-1 Colonial Athletic Association) earned their fifth straight win and snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Dukes (11-8, 7-5 CAA), beating JMU for the first time since Feb. 24, 2013.
Junior guard Jasmine Dickey led all scorers with 30 points, but Jewel Smalls stole the show with a season-high 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, including a dagger to send the game to overtime.
Smalls' eight made 3-pointers broke the single-game program record previously held by Elena Delle Donne, who drained seven threes against JMU on Feb. 18, 2010.
After a Dickey jumper gave the Blue Hens a 72-62 lead with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter, the Dukes went on a 17-4 run across seven minutes and used a pair of Madison Green free throws to take a 79-76 lead of their own with 23 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Smalls came off screens from Ty Battle and Lizzie Oleary, collected a pass from Tyi Skinner at the top of the key, and drained a deep three that tied the game at 79-79 with 17.4 seconds on the clock.
Delaware scored the first five points of the overtime period, with Battle finishing a lay-up on the opening possession, and Oleary following that with a fade-away jumper through contact and knocking down the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Blue Hens outscored JMU 15-9 in overtime.
Dickey recorded her fourth 30-point game of the season, tied a career-high with five steals, and was one rebound away from her sixth double-double of the year. With 12 points and 10 boards, Battle notched her CAA-leading 13th double-double of the season, while Skinner dished a career-high five assists.
The Blue Hens forced the Dukes into 14 turnovers, including 12 steals, and outscored JMU in points off turnovers 17-6, and fast break points 19-8.
The two teams play again tomorrow, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. from the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
