WILMINGTON, Del. – The Blue Hen women's tennis team defeated Villanova, 4-3, in their first match in 11 months Sunday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
"I am so impressed with these ladies!" said interim head coach Pablo Montana. "They showed tremendous heart and character throughout the entire match and never took their foot off the pedal. In doubles, we came out with an early lead on courts two and three and we were able to maintain the lead throughout the match. We carried that momentum into our singles and it was a hard fought battle until the end. We will continue running towards the roar this season."
Delaware started strong securing the doubles point, winning two out of the three courts. Sophomore partners Jojo Bach and Isabella Montana beat their Villanova opponents 6-3, while junior Tayo Adetunji and freshman partner Julieta Honrubia won their match 6-2.
With the doubles point secured, three Blue Hens went on to win their singles matches – Bach and fellow sophomore Eliza Askarova, along with junior Emily Gotkiewicz.
The Blue Hens will be back at the Delcastle Tennis Center on Feb. 26 to take on Fairleigh Dickinson University.
