Blue Hens right in the mix for the CAA title
RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association has compiled and released its predicted order of finish and All-CAA Preseason squad Friday morning with junior Joseph Carpenter and redshirt freshman Bryce Greenly selected to the list.
Â
Carpenter was selected as an infielder on the preseason squad and hit .327 in the shortened 2020 season with five doubles, eight RBI and a team-high 14 runs. In 2019, he was the CAA Rookie of the Year after hitting .300 and carried a 24-game hitting streak. He has started all 69 games since coming to Newark.
Â
It was only a small sample size, but Greenly was lights out coming out of the Delaware bullpen in 2020 to earn Preseason All-CAA honors as a reliever. In four appearances, Greenly carried a 0.96 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 9.1 innings of work. He had two standout performances in the shortened season, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with eight punch outs and allowed just one hit against Rider (3/8). The other was 2.1 scoreless with five strikeouts against UMass Lowell (3/1).
Â
Additionally, graduate students Kyle Baker and Derek Wakeley along with senior Jack Goan received honorable mentions. Â Â
Â
The CAA has adopted a divisional scheduling format to cut back on travel and overnight stays within the conference. CAA teams will play a 24-game double-round robin conference schedule, plus two additional conference series in the north.
Â
The Blue Hens will compete in the north division, consisting of Hofstra, Northeastern and Towson. The south features Charleston, Elon, JMU, UNCW and William & Mary. Delaware was selected second in the North Division.
Â
The season gets underway with a two-game, home-and-home series with La Salle March 6. The Blue Hens travel to Philadelphia for game one before hosting the Explorers on March 7.
