Blue Hens go 24-of-28 from the free throw line in physical game
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware women's basketball pulled away from Northeastern for a 59-47 win inside the Bob Carpenter Center Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (13-2, 10-1 Colonial Athletic Association) have now beaten the Huskies (3-9, 2-7 CAA) three times this season, the first time Delaware has won three games against the same opponent in a single season since the Blue Hens beat Northeastern three times across 2014-15.
Delaware also kept its home record unblemished at 7-0, and remains atop the CAA standings, 2.5 games ahead of second-place Drexel (9-4, 6-2 CAA).
The Blue Hens struggled shooting from the field in a physical game, but made it count at the charity stripe, knocking down 24 out of 28 (85.7%) free throw attempts.
Junior guard Jasmine Dickey led all scorers with 22 points, drawing nine fouls and making 12 of her 14 shots from the line. She recorded her fifth-straight 20-point game and the 12th total 20-point game of the season, in addition to seven rebounds and four steals.
Dickey sat out the second quarter with foul trouble, but returned in the third quarter on a mission. After Northeastern held a 22-19 lead at halftime, Dickey scored 11 third-quarter points to guide Delaware to a 38-36 advantage after three periods. The Baltimore native scored every Delaware point of a 9-2 run midway through the third that regained the lead for the Blue Hens.
The Huskies briefly went ahead 41-39 early in the fourth quarter, but a 12-0 Delaware run across 4:26 secured the win for the Blue Hens. Junior guard Jewell Smalls drained a three-pointer off an in-bounds play at the 7:01 mark to give Delaware the lead for good.
Redshirt junior forward Ty Battle joined Dickey in double figures with 13 points, going 5-of-6 from the stripe, to go with eight boards, three steals and two assists. Freshman guard Tyi Skinner added eight points with a perfect 6-for-6 game at the line.
Delaware out-rebounded Northeastern 44-32, with eight big boards from senior forward Lizzie Oleary. The Blue Hens' 18 offensive rebounds led to 22 second-chance points. Delaware also notched a season-high 18 steals, with nine different Blue Hens recording a takeaway.
The Blue Hens and Huskies wrap up the two-game series tomorrow, Feb. 7, from the Bob Carpenter Center at 3 p.m. This will be the first time in program history that Delaware has faced the same opponent four times in one season.
