Lauren Krinsky makes career-high 15 saves
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware women's soccer battled No. 2 North Carolina, but dropped a 5-0 decision Saturday afternoon inside Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky had an outstanding game, making a career-high 15 saves in goal for the Blue Hens (2-2, 0-1 Colonial Athletic Association), including several diving and close-range stops.
Talia Dellaperuta scored a pair of goals for the Tar Heels (12-1, 8-0 ACC), while Abby Allen, Alexis Strickland, and Brianna Pinto (the third overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft by Sky Blue FC) also found the net.
Delaware started the match strong, registering the first two shots on goal of the day. In the 16th minute, freshman midfielder Lea Panagiotidis collected a throw-in, turned, and ripped a shot from the top of the box that forced a save at the near post.
In the 24th minute, redshirt sophomore Anna Diffendal intercepted a ball in the midfield, sprinted into the attacking third, and fired a left-footed effort that required a save from UNC's Claudia Dickey.
While the Tar Heels held the majority of the possession early on, the Blue Hens' back line did a stellar job of limiting UNC's looks at goal. Dellaperuta scored on UNC's first shot on goal, opening the scoring in the 26th minute.
After leading 1-0 at halftime, the Tar Heels broke through with four goals in the second half to complete the 5-0 win.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MIKE BARROQUEIRO
"I give a ton of credit to our kids for the way they battled throughout the game. At the end of the day, competing against UNC is an experience that exposes character and I'm proud of what I saw from our team today. The most important thing is that we are certainly better prepared now for what lies ahead with Hofstra.
