NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey team returned to Rullo Stadium on Sunday to defeat the Temple Owls 4-0.
"Our team was excited to welcome contributions from a number of freshmen and some young returners as part of our game day rotation," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "The goal is to utilize the upcoming games to further develop them individually, and as part of the on-field performance, so that our team will be in the best possible position to pursue our end-of-season goals this spring."
The Blue Hens led an offensive battle with 16 total shots, while the Owls had just two shots on the day.
Delaware converted on two penalty strokes, first from freshman Julia Duffhuis in the twenty-third minute and later by Femke Strien in the forty-ninth minute.
Strien also scored off of a penalty corner, assisted by Emily Kresho and Ashlyn Carr, in the final minutes of the first half.
Freshman Berber Bakermans scored her first career goal in the second half with a shot from the top of the circle, assisted by Carr.
"It was nice to see our team earn a 2-0 weekend. We have been talking about how we have to prepare and execute a two-game set up within a three-day window," said van de Kerkhof. "This experience will help us as we move forward in our season with a number of double weekends coming up before playoffs arrive."
The Blue Hens return to Rullo Stadium on Friday, April 2nd against CAA foe Northeastern.
