Williamsburg, Va. – The Blue Hens started off their Virginia road trip with a tough loss to CAA foe William & Mary. This marks Delaware's first loss to a conference opponent during the regular season since 2015.
"It was nice for the team to finally get to compete again for the first time since March 21st," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, "A young Blue Hen team – including five freshmen starters – took the field and displayed many quality moments and plays that will allow us to improve in the coming weeks. All part of our development process and plan of qualifying for the CAA Tournament later this month. There were a couple of moments when luck wasn't on our side, so we will have to add to our performance and earn luck later on this spring season."
It was a defensive battle for both teams. Delaware goalkeeper, Lizzie Gaebel, had seven saves on the day and Grace Hoepfner tallied a defensive save. On the attack, the Blue Hens had eleven shots and five penalty corners.
"I would like to thank our players group for how they have gone about following COVID-19 guidelines and looking after themselves and each other since returning to campus in February," continued van de Kerkhof. "As a coaching and support staff, we know it is not easy for them, but their actions and choices clearly showcase that we have a very special team of young women that truly care for each other and themselves! We are looking forward to further developing them as Blue Hen Field Hockey Student-Athletes this spring."
The Blue Hens will face James Madison this Tuesday, April 13, at 3:00 in a rescheduled game before returning to Rullo Stadium next weekend for their final regular season matchups.
