Flood notches 14 kills in first career appearance
NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Claire Flood made her first career start and appearance, putting home 14 kills while hitting .684 to lead Delaware to a sweep of Hofstra (28-26, 26-24, 25-22) Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
The Blue Hens featured three attackers in double figures as sophomores Adelina Rivera and Lauryn Richardson each had 10 kills to join Flood.
Â
Delaware jumped out to an early 8-3 lead that included a 5-0 run with Flood at the service line before Hofstra was able to come back and take a 23-22 advantage. A sophomore Ezgi Basaranlar ace made it 24-23 and forced a Hofstra timeout before Richardson and Rivera teamed up for the block to take the opener.
Â
Again, the Blue Hens found themselves ahead early in the second as junior Grace Underwood and freshman Savannah Seemans had back-to-back kills in as part of a 3-0 run to go up 10-7. The Pride did not go away and fought back to tie things at 24 before Underwood and Richardson teamed up for a denial and Basaranlar picked up another ace.
Â
Hofstra came out hot in the third, jumping out to an 11-7 lead before a Delaware timeout that set up back-to-back kills by freshman Lily Rogers and Flood. A 4-0 run with Rogers at the service line gave the Blue Hens a 13-12 lead to regain momentum.
Â
Delaware hit .300 in the third, where Rivera picked up six of her 10 kills before Richardson had the winner to complete the sweep.
Â
Seemans collected 17 digs to go along with eight kills while Underwood had four blocks and four kills. Basaranlar and Rogers combined for 43 assists, while Rogers picked up five kills of her own and three aces.
