Delaware Rallies in Eighth Inning to Earn Doubleheader Split with Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware erupted for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a dramatic 7-5 victory in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a CAA doubleheader with Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Pride took the opener, 14-4, and was looking for the twinbill sweep by taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning of the second game. But Eric Ludman led off the frame with an infield single, while Joey Loynd followed with a walk. One out later Vinny Vaccone singled to leftfield, driving home Ludman to make it a two-run game.

Kyle Baker was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and following a Hofstra pitching change, Aidan Riley delivered a two-run single to right to bring the Blue Hens even. Joseph Carpenter then ripped a pitch into the leftfield corner, chasing home Baker and Riley with the winning runs.

Derek Wakeley followed by tossing a scoreless ninth to earn his first win of the season. Wakeley allowed one run on two hits in the final three innings, after Wyatt Nelson gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits in the opening six frames.

Hofstra scored two runs in the top of the first, while sacrifice flies by Jack Goan in the third and Aidan Kane in the fifth made it a 2-2 game. The Pride answered with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to go up three, before the Blue Hens scored five times in their decisive rally.

The Pride struck first in the opener with two runs in the top of the second, before Mitchell Balint belted a homer in the bottom half to make it a 2-1 game. But Hofstra's Steve Harrington hit a grand slam in the top of the third, while the Pride added a single run in the fourth to go up seven.

Vaccone drove home a run on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth, before Hofstra added three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the game away.
