NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware women's soccer team fell on the road to Monmouth, 2-0, in their first road contest of the season.
"I have to say, I'm really proud of the girls. Despite the result, I thought we had very long stretches where we were the better team," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "Credit to Monmouth, they are well coached, organized, and had three chances and scored on two of them."
The bulk of the first half saw both teams trying to get their footing. It wasn't until the 35th minute that Monmouth's Lauren Karabin connected on a goal for the Hawks to give the home team a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Blue Hens began the second half pushing the ball and spreading out their attackers. Despite putting their attack into another gear, the Hawk defense stayed in step with the Blue Hens prohibiting them from getting shots off like they would have liked.
Monmouth scored goal number two in the 80th minute to hold on to the 2-0 victory and improve to 3-0 on the season. The loss drops the Blue Hens record to 1-2.
Monmouth held the edge in shots, 9-8, and corner kicks, 6-3.
Lauren Krinsky made one save in goal, while Rebecca Winslow registered a trio of saves.
"There's no doubt that our group should gain confidence from how we played tonight," said Barroqueiro. "I'm gutted for the kids but I've also been around long enough to know that this is how growth works when you're young. Playing well and winning are two different things and as we hone our game, we need to keep learning how to win also. We'll bounce back and I know we are excited to be back at home on Sunday."
Delaware returns to Newark to host Seton Hall on Sunday, Aug. 29. The match is slated for 1 p.m. Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
