WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team battled American to a hard-fought 1-1 double overtime draw Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field.
The Eagles, who won the Patriot League title in the spring before advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they fell to top-ranked Clemson, opened the scoring in the 51st minute. David Coly collected a long pass down the left side from Ethan Boyle, dribbled to the center of the pitch and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
Delaware answered back in the 57th minute when Carlos Fernandez took a shot from just outside the box that was deflected by an American defender and landed just under the crossbar past the reach of the Eagles goalkeeper.
The Blue Hens had a chance to win early in the second overtime period when Zach Golden fired a 25-yard laser from the left side, but the ball caromed off the crossbar.
Delaware held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while both teams took three corner kicks on the afternoon. Scott Sampson, making his Blue Hen debut, stopped seven shots in the UD goal.
"I give my guys a ton of credit," said head coach Ian Hennessy. "The program is in protective mode this year, given the scale of the injury bugs in the program. We are using every available body at the moment, and they have shown a tremendous spirit and willingness to fight and compete against some of the top programs in the country. They did it again today for all to see on ESPN+. The lads are fighting for the program, for the staff and for each other, and I will fight for them to defend them against this run of form. There are simply too many things that have gone wrong outside of their control but their spirit has not waned, not for a second. They have responded magnificently. They are a terrific bunch of lads and very much deserved the road point today in Washington, D.C."
