BALTIMORE, Md. – The Delaware women's soccer team picked up its first road win of the season with a 2-0 victory over UMBC tonight.
"I'm proud of the girls for the way they responded in the 2nd half tonight," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We've talked a lot about the importance of putting together a complete game and tonight I thought we got better as the game wore on. Winning is tough so I'm proud of them and I hope they enjoy this one. I know we'll be hungry for more on Sunday!"
After the first 45 minutes, the scoreboard stayed at 0-0. Delaware led the Retrievers in shots, 5-4, while Lauren Krinsky had one save in the first half.
The Blue Hens kept up the pressure in the second half and it paid off as Sara D'Appolonia scored her second goal of the season, as she found an opening in the left side of the net off an assist from Anna Diffendal for the 1-0 lead.
Freshman Sydni Wright scored her first goal of the season in the 82nd minute of the match. D'Appolonia pushed the ball down the right side, pinched it over to Wright in the middle as she drew the UMBC goalkeeper out of the net, dribble the ball past her and right into the net. The goal gave the Blue Hens a 2-0 advantage, as they held on for their second win of the season.
Delaware led UMBC in shots 12 to 6 and corner kicks 5 to 4. Krinsky finished with one save, as the Delaware back line kept the Retrievers away from the net.
The Blue Hens improve to 2-3 on the season, while UMBC drops to 1-1-1.
