Women's Soccer Defeats Northeastern, 2-1, in Windy CAA Opener
9/26/2021 3:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. - Battling 15mph winds, the Delaware women's soccer team opened CAA play with a 2-1 victory over visiting Northeastern at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
"I'm just proud of the girls for the effort they put in today, keeping theirs heads up throughout this process and always believing," said Mike Barraqueiro. "This was a typical CAA game. It was an absolute grind between two good teams and I'm glad the girls could experience the attention to detail that it takes to come out on top in one of these matches."
Â
From 20 yards out, Anna Diffendal scored her second goal of the season as she ran past the Northeastern defenders and sailed the ball right over the goalkeeper's hands for the first goal of the day for the Blue Hens.
Â
At the half, both Delaware and Northeastern had two shots each. The Huskies led in corner kicks, 4-0.
Â
Coming back onto the pitch for the second half, both teams increased their offensive pressure with swift ball movement.
Â
The Blue Hens capitalized on a penalty kick by Sara D'Appolonia, who scored her third goal of the season, sending the ball high and in.
Â
Northeastern managed to sneak one past Lauren Krinsky in the 65th minute to cut Delaware's lead in half.
Â
The Huskies kept charging down to the final second with a shot that went wide right with less than two minutes to play.
Â
Despite the constant offensive pressure that Northeastern applied in the second half, the Blue Hens came away with the conference-opening win.
Â
Northeastern tallied 11 shots with five on goal and six corners. The Huskies fall to 3-5-1, 0-1 in CAA play.
Â
Delaware made its shots count on a windy day with three out of four on goal. The Blue Hens improved to 4-6 and 1-0 in conference play.
Â
The Blue Hens will travel to North Carolina for a 1 p.m. match-up on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Elon.
