NEWARK, Del. - Pablo Marmolejo, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the University of Delaware, has the Blue Hens primed to begin their 2021-22 campaign.Â
"We have a long and challenging schedule this season," said Marmolejo. "After a year and a half of uncertainty, we finally get to compete on a regular schedule against familiar opponents. We have some new schools and mid-season meets that we are looking forward to as well as getting back to CSCAA's in March. This season will truly be a indicator of the progress we've made in the last three years."
The Blue Hens return 23 student-athletes on the men's side and 24 student-athletes on the women's side. The squad also welcomes nine newcomers on the men's team and eight on the women's team.
Bryce Ciecko is among those returning and he earned a first-place finish in the 500 free at the 2021 CAA Championships with a time of 4:27.89. On the women's side, Mira Selling is back after finishing first in the 200 Free (1:47.29) and the 200 Fly (1:59.61) at the championship meet.
Last season, the women's squad placed fourth at the CAA Championships with Julia Servas earning the CAA Rookie Diver of the Year nod, while the men finished fifth.
The Blue Hens kick off the 2021-22 season on the road at UMBCÂ on Oct. 2, where they will also compete against Johns Hopkins. Delaware's home opener of the dual season will come when the Blue Hens host George Mason on Oct. 9.
Both the men's and women's teams for Delaware will have almost a month break from competition before traveling to Wilmington, N.C., for the POD Meet (Nov. 6-7). Delaware returns home the following week to host La Salle and Rider in a tri-meet on Nov. 13 before heading back on the road on Nov. 18 for the Patriot Invite hosted by George Mason to close out 2021.
Delaware starts 2022 at CAA rival Drexel on Jan. 8 before hosting a pair of meets against Seton Hall (Jan. 15) and West Chester (Jan. 22) prior to heading to Towson on Jan. 29.Â
In February, the Blue Hens host the Last Chance Meet (Feb. 5-6) to prepare for the CAA Championships in Christiansburg, Va., that will take place from Feb. 16-20.
