Quartet of Double-Digit Scorers Shines as Women’s Basketball Downs Northeastern for Third-Straight Win
1/16/2022 4:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball dominated the final quarter by outscoring Northeastern (8-6, 2-2 CAA) 31-16 to secure the 79-60 CAA home win Sunday afternoon inside the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens have won six straight games against the Huskies dating back to the 2019-20 campaign and are now 9-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
"The right word that you used was a slugfest, that's what it was and that is what every game is going to be. We talked to our team about it, we told them that this is a new Northeastern team with a lot of energy and Bridgette has done a phenomenal job with that," said head coach Natasha Adair. "I love this team because we are resilient. We looked up at the score, at no point were we ever wavering or were we ever not playing not to lose. We had to make sure we had to finish it playing Delaware basketball; it was getting stops that we needed, finishing plays, knocking down free throws and rebounding. There were so many moving parts on why we were able to get that win today but the biggest thing is we fought hard for it".
In a tightly contested opening 15:39 where neither team held a lead larger than four points, Jasmine Dickey ignited Delaware's 11-4 spurt with a pair of free throws at the 5:21 mark of the second quarter. Ty Battle drained two freebies to cap the run and sent the 33-23 game into the break.
Delaware grew its lead to a quarter-high 12 points (39-27) after Dickey's free throws with 6:52 remaining in the third. Determined to pull within single digits, Kendal Currence drained a triple with 4:18 left to kick start an 8-4 run for Northeastern to pull within four points, 48-44, heading into the fourth quarter.
Using the momentum from the third, Emily Calabrese finished a three-point play to get the Huskies in as close as three, 52-49, with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter. Delaware then left no room for doubt by putting together a dominating 27-8 run from 6:42 to 17 seconds extending the lead to a game-high 22 points, 79-57. Maddie Vizza connected from deep with 10 seconds remaining to settle the 79-60 final.
Dickey led all scorers with 31 points (14-of-17 FT) and grabbed 10 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the season (second consecutive). She added two steals and a block to her stat line. Battle followed with 15 points (5-of-10 FG, 5-of-7 FT) and 19 rebounds (11 offensive) to register her eighth double-double of the season while adding four steals and a block to her stat line. Tyi Skinner (4-of-4 FT) and Paris McBride (six rebounds) each poured in 12 points to round out Delaware's double-digit scorers. Tee Johnson came off the pine applying defensive pressure on the Huskies by nabbing four steals.
Calabrese paced Northeastern with 18 points (6-of-12 FG, 6-of-6 FT), six rebounds and two steals. Currence chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Delaware shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (26-of-34) from the free-throw line. Northeastern connected on 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point territory and 100 percent (12-of-12) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens held the rebound margin advantage (48-34) while scoring 21 second-chance points off of 23 offensive rebounds. Delaware led the way in blocks (3-2), steals (11-9), fastbreak points (19-7) while scoring 26 points off of 28 Huskie turnovers. Northeastern held the edge in assists (9-6), points in the paint (28-24) and bench points (10-9).
