NEWARK, Del. – Five Blue Hens reached double figures as Delaware defeated William & Mary, 84-74, in its Colonial Athletic Association home opener Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware, playing its first home game in 40 days, shot 50.8 percent from the field, knocked down 12 three-pointers and handed out a season-high 24 assists. The Blue Hens are now a perfect 6-0 at the BCC this season.
Ebby Asamoah scored a season-high 19 points and buried four triples for UD, while Kevin Anderson added 18 points and six helpers. Andrew Carr contributed 14 points and five assists, while Jameer Nelson, Jr. and Ryan Allen each chipped in 14 points on the night.
Ben Wight posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Tribe.
The Blue Hens led by five midway through the first half but then exploded on a 16-5 run, taking a 38-22 lead following consecutive triples by Asamoah to go up 38-22 with 6:18 on the clock. However William & Mary quickly answered with a 10-point spurt of its own, while a late layup by Julian Lewis brought the Tribe within 42-36 at the break.
It was just a four-point game early in the second half but the Blue Hens scored the next 11 points, taking a 60-45 advantage on an Anderson three-pointer with 13:09 remaining. William & Mary cut the gap to nine points three minutes later but a Nelson, Jr. dunk capped an 8-2 Blue Hen run that put Delaware up 71-56, and UD led by double figures the rest of the way.
Martin Ingelsby
"It's good to be back home. We put five guys in double figures, and it's a fun way to play when we're trusting each other. Plus I thought we did enough on the defensive end to come away with a win. I've been on our guys about sharing the basketball. We want to get the ball inside, and Dylan and Andrew do a great job of kicking it back out to open shooters. Overall this was a good win for us."
