Men’s Tennis Opens Spring with 5-2 Win Over Youngstown State

WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team won five singles matches to come back and defeat Youngstown State 5-2 on Friday afternoon to open the spring season. The match was played at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
Youngstown State jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The Penguins won the No. 2 match before James Wilkinson and Pascal Wagemaker evened things up with a 6-3 win at No. 1. A tight match at No. 3 went against the Blue Hens, 7-5, to give the point to Youngstown State.
The Blue & Gold answered quickly, cruising to five victories in singles action, including four straight-set wins. Wilkinson won a pair of tight sets at No. 1, coming away with a 7-6, 7-5 win. Wagemaker cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 3, while Guilherme Valdoleiros (6-3, 7-5) and Alexandre Gluck (6-4, 7-6) both win close second sets at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Luis Molina won the only match that went the full three sets, defeating his opponent 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 2.
The Delaware men will be back in action on Thursday, February 3 when the squad hits the road for a match at St. John's in Queens, N.Y.
