Delaware Falls Short at St. John’s, 4-3

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The University of Delaware men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision on Thursday afternoon in a dual match against St. John's. The match was played at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
"That was a heartbreaker, but I'm so proud of the way our guys competed," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "In the doubles, we came out firing and played with high intensity and aggressiveness. We were able to clinch it at No. 2. Coming off the win with doubles we had a lot of confidence going onto the singles court. We definitely had our chances at number one but kudos to St. John's for playing big on the important points. We will learn for this match as we prepare for Villanova next week."
The Blue Hens got off to a strong start, taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. James Wilkinson and Pascal Wagemaker continued their strong start to the season with a 7-6 (4) victory over the top Red Storm duo, who came in ranked No. 56 nationally. Pierce Gilheany and Liam Hedlund clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
For the second-straight match, Wagemaker won both of his matches as he came away with a 6-2, 7-6 (0) victory at No. 3 singles. Alexandre Gluck was also victorious at the No. 5 position, defeating his opponent by a 6-2, 6-1 score. However, St. John's would win four of the six singles matches to take the overall match.
The Delaware men will return home on Friday, February 11 when the squad hosts Villanova at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington. The match is slated to start at 12 p.m.
