Men's Soccer's Comeback Falls Short Against American
10/18/2022 9:18:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NEWARK, Del - Delaware men's soccer was defeated by American, 3-2, in non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022 at Grant Stadium. The Blue Hens got goals from Sam Donnellan and Orri Thorhallsson, while Adam Vik recorded four saves.
Donnellan gave the Blue Hens (3-9-2) the lead in the 11th minute on a goal off a free kick, Donnellan's eighth goal of his career. It was the quickest the Blue Hens have scored in a game this season.  Donnellan's eight goals are the most by a Delaware freshman since Guillermo Delgado had 15 in 2013, and his eight goals in his first 14 career games are the most by a Delaware player since Delgado did so in his first five games. Donnellan's eight goals are also the most by a Delaware player since Delgado had 12 in 2017. This is also the second time this season Donnellan has scored in back-to-back games, also doing so on Sept. 10 and Sept. 13 against William & Mary and George Washington.Â
American (6-3-5) was able to tie the game just before the half during the 39th minute on a goal by Nevin Baer. Coming out of halftime, the Eagles saw goals by Robert Matei and Evan Schweickert in the 59th and 64th minutes to give themselves a 3-1 lead. The Blue Hens were able to capitalize on a corner opportunity, however, in the 84th minute. Liam Fuller launched a corner kick into the box, and James Watson directed it out to Thorhallsson and he found the back of the net for the goal. It was the first assist of Fuller's and Watson's careers, while Thorhallsson scored his fifth career goal, his third in the past five games, and his second in as many games. American was able to thwart a last-minute comeback attempt by the Blue Hens though to hang on to a narrow win.Â
Delaware returns to CAA action on Saturday when they hit the road for a match with Monmouth.Â
