WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Delaware's men's soccer team defeated Monmouth, 1-0, on Oct. 22, 2022 in a road CAA game. Justin Ruth recorded his first goal of the season for the only score of the game, while Adam Vik recorded his third shutout of the season.
Both teams were evenly matched for the majority of the first half, as Delaware () and Monmouth both had three shots and two corners apiece and combined for three saves through the first 43 minutes of action. The Blue Hens broke the ice first when Ruth made a heads-up play retrieving a loose ball after the Monmouth goalkeeper lost his footing and the ball, and he found the back of the net on an uncontested shot during the 44th minute. It was Ruth's first goal of the season, and the fifth of his career. Vik also made two saves during the first half.Â
The second half was nearly evenly matched again, as Delaware had seven shots and Monmouth had six shots in the final 45 minutes and both goalkeepers kept each team off the scoreboard. The Hawks had an opportunity to tie the game in the 84th minute, but Griffin Tomas' shot was knocked away by Vik to preserve the lead. Vik recorded four saves in the match and his third career shutout. He also allowed zero goals against Mount St. Mary's on August 25, his first career game, and on Sept. 13 against George Washington. Delaware has now won two consecutive conference games as well, dating back to last Saturday when they took down Stony Brook 3-2 at Grant Stadium.Â
Delaware heads to Maryland for a matchup with the Terrapins, currently ranked No. 7 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, on Tuesday.Â
