Women’s Soccer Concludes Season

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware women's soccer team fell to visiting Drexel on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium in its regular season finale.
"This was quite the emotional day as we knew we were closing a chapter of a few very special careers," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "I thought we did well collecting ourselves at halftime and put together a pretty dominant second half. Of course, Zoe (Smith) getting a goal after all she's been through is a wonderful moment. No doubt our young group will take a lot of lessons from the season, but we also will walk away with all we've done well and need to honor the progress we've made. We are all disappointed but we also know we're better than the record so we'll regroup and be better moving forward."
Drexel scored the first goal of the game off a feed from the left side that left the right side of the net open for Anna Salvucci to knock the ball in for an early 1-0 advantage for the Dragons.
A foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Dragons that led to an Annalena O'Reilly goal and a 2-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Coming out of halftime, the Blue Hens upped their offensive presence by applying pressure to the ball on both ends. They added six more shots than was recorded in the first period, including registering three second-half corner kicks.
Taking advantage of a corner kick, Izzy Lane planted the ball in the line of sight of Zoe Smith who headed the ball right into the net to trim Drexel's lead to 2-1 with seven minutes remaining in the game. Delaware was unable to score in the final minutes, resulting in a one-goal loss for the Blue Hens.
Delaware closes its 2022 campaign with a 2-11-5 overall mark and a 1-6-2 CAA record. Odaliana Gomez finished with one save at the goalkeeper spot.
Drexel (10-2-5, 5-2-2 CAA) will continue its season in the CAA Tournament next week. The Dragons' Molly Piso tallied six saves for Drexel. The visitors had seven shots and four corner kicks.
The Blue Hens honored their senior class prior to the start of the game - Emily McNesby, Nicole Binkley, Claudia Benz, Zoe Smith, and Sara D'Appolonia.
