Abidullina, Askarova Become First Blue Hens Ever to Qualify for ITA Fall National Championships; Play for Regional Title on Monday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – With a quarterfinals and semifinals win on Sunday, Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Eliza Askarova are headed to the ITA Fall National Championships and will take on Maryland in the ITA Atlantic Regionals Doubles Final on Monday at 10 a.m. The duo becomes the first Blue Hens in program history to reach this stage.
"I am so excited and proud of Eliza and Adel for this great accomplishment," Director of Tennis Pablo Montana said. "But we are staying in the present and we are hungry for one more. Kudos to Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell for her outstanding efforts on court, and without a doubt, this is a total team effort as our student-athletes have been very supportive and encouraging throughout this event. We will use this confidence and momentum as we prepare for Maryland tomorrow."
Abidullina and Askarova started the day with an 8-3 win over hosting Virginia Tech. The Hokies defeated the 12th and 6th seeds in the previous two rounds.
In the semifinals, the Blue Hens downed 16th-seeded Penn State, 6-4, 6-1.
The ITA Fall National Championships take place in San Diego from November 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
