LEXINGTON, KY – "Keep the accolades rolling!!" The University of Delaware volleyball senior outside hitter Lani Mason has been named GameChanger/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Tuesday afternoon. Mason, who was named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week Monday afternoon after putting together a memorable, record-setting performance, is the first Blue Hen to ever receive the national nod and the second CAA player to be recognized by the AVCA (Nina Cajic, Towson).
In Delaware's lone match of the week, Mason was swinging at a rate of .324 to set career highs of 38 kills and 24 digs, including posting her sixth double-double of the season, in the thrilling come-from-behind five-set victory at Charleston (Oct. 2). The Chester, Va. native's 38-kill performance is a new program-best, surpassing her own record of 35 kills that she set two weeks ago against Northeastern (Sept. 18). This is Mason's third 30+ kill performance this season and she currently holds two of the top five single-match kill totals in the NCAA this fall.
She closed out the Charleston series on Monday (Oct. 3) leading the way with 16 kills to go along with nine digs, two aces and one block in Delaware's straight-sets victory. Her performance helped the Blue Hens extend their winning streak to nine matches and remain undefeated in conference play.
On the season, Mason averages 6.11 points, 5.63 kills and 2.75 digs in 52 sets played. She leads the conference points per set, points (317.5), kills (293) and kills per set. Mason leads the nation in kills per set and ranks second in points per set, fifth in total kills, seventh in points and 13th in attacks per set (12.00).
WHAT'S NEXT
Mason and the Blue Hens will return to the First State and open their four-game homestand this weekend. They will host the defending CAA champions Towson in a weekend series Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9 which are both slated for a 2 p.m. start inside Bob Carpenter Center.
