Men’s Basketball Holds Close at No. 7 Duke Before Blue Devils Pull Away

DURHAM, N.C. – Delaware men's basketball (1-2) made the trip to Durham on Friday night, tangling with No. 7 Duke (3-1) and falling 92-58 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, despite sticking within six at the half.
The Blue Hens did their best to hang with the Blue Devils early on as Jyáre Davis and Jameer Nelson Jr. traded three-pointers, but Duke came out scorching hot, shooting 87.5 percent through the first media timeout to lead 14-10.
Duke's Tyrese Proctor was a force in the first half, scoring nine points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing three assists.
Freshman Cavan Reilly impressed off the bench in the first frame for Delaware, shooting 3-for-4 including sinking a pair of three-pointers to keep UD in the game with 10 first-half points. Those 10 points marked a career-high for the rookie.
The Hens used a 7-0 run late in the first to pull as close as five, but the Blue Devils led 42-36 heading into the break. Duke shot 53.6 percent to Delaware's 40.7 percent in the first half.
UD continued to hang around early in the second half thanks to some open looks, as both Davis and Nelson Jr. stretched their point totals to nine on the evening.
Duke used an 18-3 run to begin to pull away by the under-eight media timeout, extending its lead to 23 with 7:53 remaining.
The Blue Devils closed with more of the same, knocking off the Blue Hens 92-58.
Kyle Filipowski continued his torrid start to his Duke career, scoring 18 points and adding eight rebounds. Tyrese Proctor contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Three different Blue Hens scored double-digit points, with Davis leading the pack at 11. Nelson Jr. and Reilly each scored 10.
The Blue Hens head to Philadelphia for the Cathedral Classic next week, playing three games in three days at The Palestra from Nov. 25-27.
