Volleyball Concludes Season at CAA Championship

TOWSON, Md. – The third-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team saw its season come to an end Saturday evening after falling in straight sets (15-25, 21-25, 22-25) to top-seeded Towson (29-1) in the championship showdown of the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, presented by Primis, inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. First-year head coach Kimberly Lambert and her Blue Hens conclude their memorable campaign with a 17-11 record while the Tigers were crowned CAA champs for the fourth consecutive season and will go dancing in the NCAA Tournament.
Lani Mason paced Delaware with 11 kills and 10 digs to post her 17th double-double on the season while Ezgi Basaranlar directed the Blue Hen offense with 25 assists in the title match. Both Mason and Basaranlar earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for their incredible performance in the three-day tournament.
Delaware finest hitting performance was in the third set, attacking at a rate of .323, before finishing the evening at a .233 clip, compared to Towson's .350. The Blue Hens drew even with the Tigers with three blocks apiece while Towson held the edge in points (60-36), kills (49-30), aces (8-3), assists (44-29) and digs (39-32).
The Tigers opened the championship match taking the opening set 25-15. Towson remained in the driver's seat in the second set as they took the 7-3 lead. Delaware turned things around and kept it close by using a 6-2 run to pull within three points, 23-20. The Tigers then scored two of the three remaining points to take the 2-0 lead (25-21).
With their backs against the wall and the third set scoreboard showing 6-2 in favor of Towson, Delaware took its first lead of the night in the third set thanks to Mason nailing down Basaranlar's feed that kickstarted a 8-2 spurt,10-8. The back-and-forth battle commenced as the 743 fans watched the set have eight ties and five lead changes. Kirah Johnson buried Basaranlar's assist to make it a 20-all set before the Tigers scored four-unanswered points to take the lead for good, 24-20. The Blue Hens capitalized off of Towson's service error and Mason put Delaware's final point away to keep in efforts of keeping the season alive, 24-22. A ball handling error was called against the Blue Hens that crowned the Tigers CAA champions on their home floor.
Savannah Seemans finished with seven kills while Eileen Gex anchored Delaware's defense with 13 digs.
Victoria Barrett led the way for Towson with 16 kills, six digs and two blocks to be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer. Irbe Lazda followed with 12 kills and Nina Cajic was right behind her with 11 kills.
