Women’s Basketball Battles Fresno State
11/25/2022 1:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened up the 2022 Daytona Beach Invitational Friday morning against Fresno State inside Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Blue Hens (3-2) second half surge was not enough as they dropped a 53-49 decision to the Bulldogs (4-1).
"It was a tough one today," said head coach Sarah Jenkins. "We turned it around in the second half. We were able to chip away at Fresno State's lead and even trail by only one point. We have some things that we need to work on as we prepare for Illinois tomorrow."
After trailing 35-19 heading into the break, the Blue Hens turned things around to start the third quarter. Kharis Idom laid in two to ignite a much-need 8-2 run for Delaware to trim the deficit eight points, 37-29. Fresno State extended its lead back up to double-digits, thanks to Daylee Dunn's triple with 1:03 left (46-33) before Idom sank a freebie for the Blue Hens with 29 seconds left, 46-34.
With their backs against the wall, the Blue Hens responded quickly as Makayla Pippin's layup two seconds into the fourth quarter kickstarted an 15-4 run to pull within one points, 50-49. The Bulldogs remained in control the remaining 1:11, scoring the game's remaining three points to secure the 53-49 final.
Pippin paced Delaware with 13 points (6-10 FG), nine rebounds and three steals. Idom followed with 12 points and five rebounds while Klarke Sconiers chipped in with 11 points (4-6 FG, 3-4 FT).
Amaya West led the way with 14 points (6-10 FG) while Yanina Todorova added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Bulldogs' win.
In the end, Delaware shot 38.7 percent (19-49) from the field, nine percent (1-11) from beyond the arc, and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line. Fresno State connected on 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field, 15.0 percent (3-20) from three-point territory, and 55.6 percent (10-18) from the charity stripe. Delaware outscored Fresno State in points in the paint (28-26). The Blue Hens outscored Fresno State 30-18 in the second half, and shot just over 41 percent from the field while holding the Bulldogs to five field goals in the final 20 minutes on 26 attempts.
